Search Tips

You can search the Western New York Suffragists web site for specific people, events, or ideas. Here are example searches you could run:

Search Phrase	Result
anthony	Locates pages that mention "Anthony", for example, Susan B. Anthony, Mary Anthony or Captain Anthony.
gilman and catt	Retrieves pages that mention both "Gilman" and "Catt".
mary or susan	Finds pages that mention either "Mary" or "Susan".
mary not susan	Locates pages that mention "Mary" but do not mention "Susan".
movement*	The asterisk (*) is a truncation symbol. This search would retrieve pages that mentioned "movement" or "movements".

The search is not case-sensitive, so you can enter words in upper or lowercase.

Phrase searching is not supported.

By default, the search engine will search all of the text. However, you can search for words in specific sections of each page:

Page Section	Result
Title	Finds the words only if they exist in the page title.
Heading	Locates the words only if they exist in headings in the text.
Comment	Finds the words only if they exist in comments on the page.
Emphasized Text	Locates the words only if they exist in bold or italicized text.

Once you type in your search terms and select which fields (or page sections) should be searched, then you should click on Start Search. This will run your request and return a list of pages that match your request.

The Search Results will be listed in order of their relevance. Relevance is the program’s best guess as to how relevant the specific pages are to your search. This rank number, which can range from 1 to 1000, depends on a number of factors, including as how many times your search word appears on the page. The Search Results will also tell you the size in bytes of the pages found (Size of Document). You may view any of the pages by clicking on their links.
